I Like Pocono

In spite of some of the Senior Bro's comments, I'm glad they race at Pocono twice a year. Pocono is a unique track in a sea of ovals. Yes, there were WAAAAY to many cautions last weekend, but blame the Nascar officials more than the racetrack itself. There were several quickie cautions that could have easily stayed green. I would like to see the Pocono races spaced a bit further apart, however.

I'm a big believer that Nascar champion drivers should show the ability to win on many different types of tracks. However, most of the new tracks being built are very standard and uniform oval tracks. In the process, Nascar is losing some unique old tracks which happen to be at bad locations. Nascar needs more short tracks, more road courses, and more quirky tracks like Pocono. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the trend.

Comments:
OK, perhaps I was a bit harsh in my criticism of Pocono. Like Sean said, it does have the benefit of being one of the more interesting tracks in a sea of boring 1.5-mile ovals. But it does seem odd that they get two races here within two weeks of each other.

What if Pocono were one of the 10 "Chase" tracks at season's end. That would please Bobby Labonte fans, for sure. Maybe even the Earnhardt Jr. crowd. And if Jimmie Johnson continues to run there like he did Sunday, that might even be one he could bank for a few points toward the title.

I think the best solution to the Chase dilemma of which 10 tracks to use should be left to a lot draw before the season begins. All 26 tracks (well, 25 now...) go into a hopper and they pull 10. The ones picked are the ones that count for the championship, and they schedule all those races within the final 10 weeks accordingly.

Can you see Sears Point and Daytona and the Brickyard all running in November? Bring it on!
